Gaming Matters: FIFA16 Wimbledon Career Season 3

After spending a good portion of Season 2 battling in three cups as well as the league there was only one objective for Season 3 – get promoted to the Premier League. We only played in four cup games – beating Hartlepool United and losing to Aston Villa in the League Cup and beating Rotherham United (with a 5-4 thriller) and losing to Bournemouth the the FA Cup (thanks to a very unlucky goal you can see in the YouTube section). We achieved target and not only gained promotion but won the league for the third consecutive season. Our record was 29 wins, 11 draws and 6 defeats thereby scoring one point less than our League One season. We scored 89 and conceded 43 which with a goal difference of 46 is two goals better than last season too. A number of core players left in the summer before Season Three started as they had been signed on two year loan contracts to lift the team from the pit of League Two (mission accomplished). For the first time in the career I spent transfer fees on a player (two in fact). Up until now my squad comprised of loan players, unattached players and players signed on pre-contract in the previous January prior to their arrival. Two young, talented Spaniards arrived from their home country after struggling to break into the first team. The exciting centre back is Sergio Ayala from Valencia and we also bought Juan Camara who is a central midfielder from Barcelona. In addition we signed four pre-contract players, three unattached players and four loanees. It was a busy summer of transfer dealing and with thirteen arrivals and only three departures we had a very full squad for the first half of the season.
The squad was thinned considerably in January as we cleared some fringe players to build cash for another round of pre-contract signings. I did unfortunately sell the young Italian wonderkid Sergio Mancini but the offer of £15m was too good to turn down and the money was used to bring in some great reinforcements for Season Four in the BPL. We also said goodbye to Mohammed Amsif (another keeper arriving for free in the summer and leaving for cash in January) and some older players like Pedro Quinonez, Gary Coulibaly and Callum Morris. Of the last three only Quinonez has made an impact on the first team.

Goalkeepers
Alban Lafont – 19yo – France – 69 – 20/0 – 1/0 – 21/0 = 52/0
Mohamed Amsif – 28yo – Morocco – 70 – 23/0 – 3/0 – 26/0
Anton Vall – 20yo – Sweden – 68 – 4/0 – 0/0 – 4/0
Amsif was very good for the first half of the season he was with us but with a good offer of £1.6m on the table from Deportivo La Coruna on the table I realised we still had Lafont on loan to take over. The French youngster had taken over from Salomon Libman last season after the Peruvian stopper also arrived in July and departed in January. Anton Vall also made four starts as he started to complain about the lack of game time given to him.
Right Backs
Michael Heinloth – 26yo – Germany – 70 – 28/0 – 2/1 – 30/1
Mamdou Bagayoko – 28yo – Ivory Coast – 66 – 2/0 – 1/0 – 3/0 = 24/1
Jordan Ikoko – 24yo – DR Congo – 71 – 17/0 – 1/0 – 18/0
Callum Wilson – 20yo – England – 59 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0
Heinloth took over from departed loanee Lukas Klostermann and became the undoubted first choice right back. Ikoko came on loan from Juventus and actually seemed faster and more capable on the overlap but Heinloth was more reliable and won a large percentage of tackles. Bagayoko continues to be a fringe player with few opportunities and Wilson returned from a two year loan to find three players in front of him in the queue for the post office and may have to find somewhere else to buy his stamps.
Left Backs
Angelino – 21yo – Spain – 75 – 33/1 – 0/0 – 33/1 = 50/1
Callum Borthwick-Jackson – 21yo – England – 70 – 13/0 – 4/1 – 17/1
Jason Petratos – 19yo – Australia – 57 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0 = 4/0
Angelino stepped up from second choice last season to first choice this season and was equally as involved in attacks down the left as Brendan Galloway was before him. We needed decent cover so I brought in Borthwick-Jackson from Manchester United but this has been a position now dominated by loanees for three years. As we get to the highest division we will struggle to find a loanee good enough although Borthwick-Jackson will still be here in his second season. Petratos played one game but is not developing fast enough to remain with the squad.
Centre Backs
Efe Ambrose – 29yo – Nigeria – 69 – 35/0 – 1/0 – 36/0
Sergio Mancini – 19yo – Italy – 77 – 24/0 – 2/0 – 26/0 = 70/1
Sergio Ayala – 25yo – Spain – 70 – 26/2 – 2/0 – 28/2
Callum Morris – 28yo – Ireland – 66 – 0/0 – 2/0 – 2/0 = 19/1
Gary Coulibaly – 32yo – France – 64 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0 = 23/0
Edgar Lezcano – 20yo – Paraguay – 68 – 11/1 – 2/0 – 13/1
Jonathan D'Haene – 18yo – Belgium – 60 – 2/0 – 0/0 – 2/0
Ambrose took over from Heylen as the captain of the team and he, Mancini and Ayala rotated for much of the season (well, half for Mancini). The Nigerian centre back comes from Celtic with great experience and was brilliant in the air all season. I've already discussed Mancini's departure and Ayala's arrival above but another worthy mention is the Paraguayan defender Edgar Lezcano. He arrived unattached for free and in the thirteen games he played he looked like he could be a good player to have in future seasons.
Central Midfielders
Pedro Quinonez – 32yo – Ecuador – 69 – 12/2 – 2/0 – 14/2 = 45/4
Joey Pelupessy – 25yo – Netherlands – 73 – 29/3 – 4/0 – 33/3
Dean Furman – 29yo – South Africa – 69 – 30/2 – 1/0 – 31/2
Juan Camara – 24yo – Spain – 70 – 29/2 – 2/0 – 31/2
Emerson Hyndman – 22yo – USA – 69 – 20/4 – 2/0 – 22/4 = 57/7 Suk Won Bae – 20yo – South Korea – 65 – 6/0 – 2/0 – 8/0 = 18/0
Omar Heaton – 19yo – England – 63 – 0/0 – 2/0 – 2/0 = 13/0
Jake Conlon – 20yo – England – 58 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0 = 3/0
Huang Bowen – 30yo – China – 67 – 6/0 – 0/0 – 6/0
Gabor Vadocz – 18yo – Hungary – 64 – 4/0 – 0/0 – 4/0
Jackson Solari – 18yo – Australia – 67 – 2/0 – 1/0 – 3/0
Romain Perraud – 20yo – France – 67 – 2/0 – 0/0 – 2/0
Over the seasons it always appears to be in central midfield where I use the highest number of players each year. I think it's because the youth academy tends to generate more CDMs, CMs and CAMs than any other positions and the youngsters need to get the odd game. That being said we had six really strong central midfielders all vying for two spots in the starting line up and that's why we had to sell one in January as another had their loan run out. The squad was too big and the midfielders not getting enough game time were growing restless. Hyndman completed his two year loan in January meaning he bridged three seasons with us. He really stepped it up a gear in this season and as you can see from the YouTube clips below he was involved in some fantastic goals. The sale was the likeable Ecuadorian Pedro Quinonez who was one of the better performers when used but his game time was mostly from the bench this season and when Leeds United offered £325k so that they could pair him with our old midfielder Jake Reeves I took the offer, especially as Pedro is now 32 years old. The midfield purchase Juan Camara was excellent but even better was the free signing from Heracles in the Dutch Eredivise – Joey Pelupessy. Over the course of the season there were three main cental midfielders and I would say Pelupessy was the best on the ball, the best passer and the most consistently influential. The third mainstay midfielder was Dean Furman, a South African who also arrived with no price tag from Supersport United in his home country. He wasn't an attacking playmaker but he was strong in the tackle never game the ball away easily.
So Hyndman and Quinonez left in January and Pelupessy, Camara and Furman were the main CMs but there were several other players to feature over the season. I'm still liking the attacking South Korean Suk Won Bae who has yet to score but played another eight games in the Championship, especially effective as a second half substitute. Whether he will feature much in the Prem is another question. Huang Bowen arrived from China in January as a back-up midfielder who wouldn't expect to feature regularly as did Chelsea's young French CM Romain Perraud who only got a couple of games. Gabor Vadocz is a Hungaria version of Bae and it will be interesting to see if one of them develops and excels better than the other. The other three youth players who got some game time were Omar Heaton, Jake Conlon and Jackson Solari. Heaton had a loan spell with Dagenham & Redbridge while Solari left in January for a whopping £1m to Charlton Athletic.
Right Midfielders
Andy Barcham – 31yo – England – 64 – 5/0 – 0/0 – 5/0 = 67/11
Ryan Kent – 21yo – England – 74 – 32/3 – 0/0 – 32/3 = 73/7
Julian Green – 22yo – USA – 72 – 26/5 – 3/0 – 29/5 = 62/8
Jaroslav Navratil – 26yo – Czech Rep. - 69 – 8/2 – 3/1 – 11/3
Jeffren – 30yo – Venezuela – 67 – 8/0 – 0/0 - 8/0
Jarrett Molyneux – 18yo – England – 65 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0 = 7/0
Tobias Sandberg – 18yo – Sweden – 56 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0
Kent and Green remained as the main threats on the right wing and there really was no separating them in ability and performance. Kent played three more games than Green but that's probably because I saw him as a more versatile player from the bench. Green's optional position was as a striker where any bench would already have a couple of better candidates. Kent could play at CAM which gave the option of a diamond midfield or playing three CAMs (depending on the team selected). If I was to say which was the better over the course of the season I'd say Kent but then I think Green was better in Season 2 in League One so maybe it's a tie. Andy Barcham is still on the books but the 31 year-old is rarely called upon. It's nearly the same for two of the season's signings who struggled to oust Kent and Green from the right wing. Maybe they would have played more if our cup runs were more successful. The players I'm talking about are Navratil who came free from Heracles like Pelupessy and Jeffren who I'd been looking at as a free transfer from the start but was never certain how good he would be. A short spell managing the Venezuela national team gave me a chance to assess him and although he lacks the raw pace of others has he good ball skills and never loses it easily. The other two appearances were youngsters Molyneux and Sandberg who played one game each.
Left Midfielders
Sheyi Ojo – 20yo – England – 71 – 34/8 – 2/0 – 36/8 = 97/22
Dennon Lewis – 21yo – England – 72 – 24/1 – 3/0 – 27/1
Now that Demarai Gray has gone it has given the opportunity to Sheyi Ojo to make the left wing spot his own and he did that and more. I think Ojo was one of the best players his season, perhaps bettered only by Allan Saint-Maximin in attack. He added another eight goals to his tally and is now fifth on the all time (my three seasons) scorers list. Dennon Lewis came on loan from Watford and played a good number of games, especially replacing Ojo in the second half of matches, however he never really impressed.
Strikers
Allan Saint-Maximin – 21yo – France – 73 – 34/23 – 1/0 – 35/23 = 71/39
Juan Carlos Arce – 33yo – Bolivia – 64 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0 = 29/6
Dino Ndlovu – 28yo – South Africa – 72 – 26/11 – 4/3 – 30/14 = 56/24
Samed Yesil – 24yo – Germany – 70 – 26/9 – 0/0 – 26/9 = 63/35
Adebayo Azeez – 24yo – England – 61 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0 – 14/3
Ventsislav Hristov – 29yo – Bulgaria – 68 – 12/6 – 3/3 – 15/9
Marcus Rashford – 20yo – England – 71 – 18/5 – 2/1 – 20/6
Jake Baldwin – 17yo – England – 52 – 1/0 – 0/0 – 1/0
While Samed Yesil was the striking star of Season 2 his crown was stolen in Season 3 by Allan Saint-Maximin. The French striker has immense pace, great dribbling and his footwork to beat defenders was uncanny. He has a great selection of goals below. Across the two seasons he has scored more goals than Yesil (39 to 35) but the German has the better striker rate (56% to 55%). They weren't the only stars in attack though as we had three other strikers with a good amount of game time. By the end of the season I even tended to prefer Dino Ndlovu to Yesil he seemed smoother and had a great shot on him and with 24 goals in 52 games across his two season so far he's been impressive. When we look at strike rates the main man is the new signing from Levski Sofia, Ventsislav Hristov. The Bulgarian netted 9 goals in 15 appearances and when you think that a good number of those would be from the bench it's a great return. He didn't have much pace or dribbling though compared to our loan signing Marcus Rashford who joined for two years from Manchester United. With 6 goals in 20 games he hasn't set the world on fire like he has done in real life and wouldn't get near the England team in this game but he was solid enough when needed.

PLAY The first goal of the season against Brentford is worth showing as it highlights Saint-Maximin's eye for goal. Ojo, Furman and Quinonez work the ball into the middle of the park and the Ecuador midfielder plays a ball into space for Kent. The on-loan Liverpool player spots Saint-Maximin peeling away from his marker and plays a great through ball that leaves the defence with no chance of catching the French striker. Andreas Bjelland tried to get the but the Danish centre back is too late and David Button in goal is beaten by a great left foot strike.
PLAYQuite probably the quickest goal I've scored on FIFA16 as the ball hits the net at 1:47 and it's not even a striker running through players with a dribble from the kick off. Instead Rashford plays it wide to Dennon Lewis who goes past Lewis Hawkins then gives it back to the young striker as he continues his run for the box. Rashford evades Michael Woods then spots Ndlovu in an advanced position and plays the ball to him. Before Hartlepool centre back Scott Harrison can get a tackle in the South African striker shoots and beats Northern Ireland keeper Trevor Carson for a super fast goal.
PLAY A great counter attack goal against Aston Villa in the League Cup. From the goalkeeper collecting the ball Lezcano, Ikoko and Green work well to get the ball to Quinonez in midfield when is when the attack springs to life. He spots the run of Rashford and gives him a ball to run onto with a powerful pass which the English striker collects with a great first touch. He beats Jose Crespo then sees a run from Ndlovu and plays a through ball himself. Ndlovu runs past Micah Richards to get onto the ball and the former Fiorentina defender cannot catch him as he is one on one with Jed Steer. He places the ball past Steer for a great opening goal.
PLAY Brilliance from Sheyi Ojo against Nottingham Forest. He first gets the ball in the left back position the goes past Chris Burke and Chris Cohen and on a good run down the left wing. Before he can be tackled by Michael Mancienne he plays the ball forward to Yesil on the left wing. He turns and plays a long ball into he middle for Saint-Maximin as Ojo continues his run and sprints for the box. The French striker plays a one touch pass into the path of Ojo who shoots from the edge of the box just before Kelvin Wilson can tackle him and the ball flies past Swiss keeper Yvon Mvogo (signed from Young Boys) to score from a move Ojo started at the other end of the field.
PLAY It's always good to see an opposition howler and here's one from our match against Queens Park Rangers. It's a promising attack when Saint-Maximin gives the ball to Yesil outside the box and makes a run for a one-two. The German striker reads the plot but the return ball is lacking and James Perch should clear with ease. The centre back inexplicably plays the ball back to Alex Smithies in the QPR goal as Saint-Maximin comes tearing past him. It's a race for the ball between goalkeeper and striker but the ball gets to Smithies with enough time for him to at least knock it away to one side then hoof it clear. Unfortunately his first touch knocks the ball forwards to the incoming striker and Smithies makes a dash for the ball. The pair collide with the ball at their feet and it's Saint-Maximin that comes out the victor as the ball goes into the net from his tackle rather than from a shot.
PLAY A goal in two parts with power and expert dribbling from Ndlovu then brilliance and dazzling footwork from Saint-Maximin. We're playing against Sheffield United and it's 0-0 mid way through the first half as Ojo passes to Ndlovu with his back to goal some way out. The South African turns John Brayford and then as he's still trying to fend him off he manages to get past Harrison McGahey too. As he gets to the box he jinks past Tom Kennedy and all this time Brayford is still tracking him and trying to get a foot on the ball but Ndlovu is too quick and too strong. He bears down on goal and shoots but George Long manages to save and avoid the goal that the run deserved. It's not over yet though as he's only parried it to his left and it was going away until it bounced off of a sliding Bob Harris. The ball then bounces back to Saint-Maximin who quickly realises that an immediate shot would be blocked by the prone Harris so with speed of thought he drags the ball back behind him the pivots through a near 360 degree spin with a shot into the unguarded net.
PLAY Kent's equalising goal against Reading is my personal goal of the season. From a short corner Hyndman dribbles to the box and spots Kent unmarked outside the area. He chips the ball for Kent to run onto and he meets the ball at the edge of the box. His first touch controls the ball in the air and before Jake Cooper or any other defender can get to him he volleys with tremendous power past David Marshall into the net.
PLAY Dino Ndlovu shows why he was one of the most important players this season with an injury time winner against Hull City. He's the first to meet Amsif's goal kick and beating Jake Livermore in the air he flicks the ball wide to Kent. The Liverpool loanee uses his skills to turn his Egyptian marker Ahmed Elmohamady and heads for the right wing where he spots Ndlovu continuing his run. The striker stays onside and receives the ball in the right wing position outside the box. He turns inside Jeffrey Bruma (signed from PSV) and heads for goal. After dribbling past dribble between Andrew Robertson and Michael Dawson he shoots for the far post and beats Dusan Kuciak for the winning goal.
PLAY Another effective short corner but this is a much simpler version of Kent's goal against Reading. Here we're playing Ipswich and Camara passes to Green from the corner who spots Ojo unmarked outside the area. He plays a low ball for the winger so he is able to control it easier and Ojo smashes the ball past Dean Gerken before he can barely react.
PLAY The Ojo goal gave us the lead against Ipswich but they equalised and the score was 1-1 heading into injury time. Here's another late winner and it's from another corner. This time Ojo is the corner taker and spots Saint-Maximin free outside the box. The French striker takes a touch before unleashing his shot but this time Gerken is ready for it and manages to deflect the shot. He can only parry it up and away though and it falls towards Ipswich defenders Jonas Knudsen and another you can't spot properly and Wimbledon centre back Efe Ambrose. Our Nigerian defender beats the Ipswich players to the ball, heading it into space near Yesil who turns from having his back to goal, pivots to striker the ball on the volley before Christophe Berra even reacts and the ball sails past Gerken to score at the far post.
PLAY I think Ndlovu must have been invisible for this goal because nobody seems to want to mark him. Leading 1-0 early in the second half against Preston North End we have a counter attack thanks to Mancini's excellent challenge on Daniel Johnson. Pelupessy breaks forward and the Preston back line are on the half way line as the team presses for an equaliser, allowing acres of space for out strikers to exploit. The Dutch midfielder plays a through-ball for Saint-Maximin to exploit the space and he's running down the right channel with nobody in front of him and being chased closely by two defenders (one of which is Tom Lockyer purchased from Bristol Rovers) and there two more trying to catch up while a fifth tracks Ndlovu on the inside. Even he leaves his target though as Saint-Maximin gets into the box and suddenly the striker has three players trying to converge on him while Ndlovu is now unmarked in the middle. The cross is to perfection and Ndlovu volleys past Andres Fernandez (formerly of Granada) who is helplessly abandoned by his defence.
PLAY Highlights here of an epic 5-4 win over Rotherham United in the third round of the F A Cup. Chris Dawson gives Rotherham the lead with a shot curling past Amsif before Borthwick-Jackson equalised on a raiding from from left back. A Dawson header puts them back in front at 2-1 then Pelupessy goes on a great run into the box and curls a shot to the left corner but the ball deflects off of Heinloth and in at the near post instead, crediting the goal to the right back. Hristov then scores two goals to put us 4-2 in front, both first time shots from crosses by Green and Ojo. Emmanuel Ledesma then pulls one back for Rotherham with a shot from outside the box and Navratil scores a late fifth for us which turned out to be crucial at 5-3. Rotherham had a chance to pull one back with a penalty but struck the post before minutes later pulling it back to 5-4 with a fierce near post shot. Thankfully there was no time for an equaliser.
PLAY Fulham put themselves in their own pickle with this goal which led to their 2-1 defeat with a late winner. Furman and Lewis attacked down the left but the Fulham defence stood firm and Dan Burn retrieved the ball. He passed the ball to Tom Cairney but from there the Fulham defence tried to be too elaborate. Cairney exchanged passes with Richard Stearman before passing back to Burn. It's not wise to play possession football in your own right back area. As Dennon Lewis closed down Burn the Fulham defender squared the ball to his keeper with no outfield players as an option. Keeper Andy Lonergan to a controlling touch and had options even though Yesil was trying to close him down. Rather than pass to one of the open players though he miscued badly and passed the ball straight to the incoming German striker. Yesil didn't need any more invitation and placed the ball back past Lonergan for the goal and the game.
PLAY This is our galling exit from the F A Cup at the hands of Bournemouth with a 21st minute penalty. It's so cruel though as Callum Wilson misses as the ball hits the bar and bounces outside the goal before colliding with goalkeeper Lafont's rear and and rolling back in over the line. This was a cruel way to lose.
PLAY It's a good enough goal against Sheffield United but this replay is all about the pass at 0:07 seconds into the clip as Hristov beats Stefan Scougall to a loose ball. He then has his back to goal about forty yards out but plays a back-heel pass to Yesil on the edge of the box. It has to be the longest back-heel pass I've seen AND it reaches its target – not like those skills on Revista de le Liga when they should players dribbling skills only for them to pass to the opposition. Yesil turns and shoots but it's parried by keeper George Long into the path of Camara and the Spanish midfielder heads the ball in.
PLAY I'm not really one for keeping the ball with one player and dribbling the length of the field around defenders. a) it's not very realistic and b) I'm not very good at it. This is one of those goals where it just happened though. Playing against Bournemouth in the Championship and wanting to get some F A Cup revenge Saint-Maximin gets the ball in the right back position and just goes and goes and goes. Every time I looked to pass the better option seemed to be to continue the run – either the intended recipient was marked or space opened up at the right time for the run. The too much going on to describe the whole run and it's hard to know for sure who he went past but the list of players 'active' for Bournemouth would usually be the nearest to him. Here's the list of players that they tried to get to him with: Tyrone Mings, Joshua King, Eunan O'Kane, M Butcher (must be a youth regen), Andy Surman, Gonzalo Rodriguez (presumably from Fiorentina), Matt Ritchie and Tommy Elphick before shooting and scoring past Adam Federici. Not bad.
PLAY This match against Bournemouth was a vital match in the battle for the Championship title as they were challenging Hull City and ourselves for top spot. To have the match done and dusted at 3-0 by half time was therefore a dream come true. Ayala intercepts the ball with a tackle on Butcher and with a rare foray forward he even goes past Mings down the right wing. He then feeds Pelupessy who is also on the attack and the Dutch midfielder gets the ball on the right hand edge of the box. He jinks inside Elphick, goes past Rodriguez and shoots past Federici to seal the game.
PLAY We're at home to QPR in the title run in and there are still two games after this but we know a win means we're champions. As ninety minutes arrives though it's still 0-0 so it looks like we're going to have to wait until the next match. Samed Yesil has other ideas though and takes advantage of the five minutes added on by the referee. We're trying to get the ball back and he gets a great tackle on Lucas Melano but the ball goes out for a QPR throw in. Darnell Furlong throws the ball back to Nedum Onuoha in defence but Yesil spots what he's doing and goes to intercept as it needs a long throw. With an eye on the striker charging towards him Onuoha does get his head to the ball but it deflects behind him and it's now perfect for Yesil to run and collect the loose ball. The only player between Yesil and the keeper is Grant Hall but the QPR defender just moves out of the way in the kind of AI movement that lets FIFA16 down from time to time. The proverbial red sea has now opened and Yesil is free to curl the ball past Matt Ingram for the goal, for the match and for the whole title winning season. AFC Wimbledon are winners of the Championship and are heading to the Premier League.
